As far as classically tinged Ghazal is concerned, Anup Jalota & Ghulam Ali are best... you gotta hear their live performances, not studio recordings. And in the pop-Ghazal arena, Jagjit Singh is king! Among many of my fav's, Anup Jalota's "Ghungroo Toot Gaye", Ghulam Ali's "Woh Jo Hum Mein Tum Mein Qaraar Tha" and Jagjit's "Kaal Chaudhvin Ki Raat Thi" are definitely around the top, and all of them are live.
btw. BIMpom has got tune, that mofo... haven't heard him singing any Ghazal, but I think he can do a pretty good job.

ahem baba :P:P:P
magar baba utshob e voice ke dise taile?:P:P but if u talk about ghazal king then king of ghazal or ghazal shamrat is anup jhalota. because of his lyrics and semiclassical way of singing. but the thing is its true that jagjit shing is also wellknown ghazal singer. but i cannot tell him the perfect ghazal singer because most of his ghazals are in modern format. and the lyrics are good but the tune are not that much in classical mode. and this is my personal opinion that i do like his songs but not as a ghazal. ghazal should have classical improvise on it. few other real good ghazal artist are ustad amanat ali kha, ahmed hussain muhammad hussain, ghulam ali, begum akhtar, mehedi hassan and few other.. but like most of the listener know names like jagjit shing and pankaz udhas which are realy a modern form of ghazal singers. hey try some ghazals by anup jhalota : 1) tumhare shaherka mausam bara suhana lage. 2) bhul ja na tha to fir. 3) nahi hae ye tera ucha nahi hae .............. and lots more. by ustad amanat ali khan: 1) pyar nahi hae sur se jisko wo murakh insan nahi 2) mora jiya na lage 3) ye nathi hamari kismat. and lot more. ... if u r a good listener or also a listener with a research motivation then u should look for the old ghazals with the legendary singers.

ya he used to be a non classical ghazal singer. but now a days, he became a regular singer. i cannot say his new songs are ghazal. although by the definition of ghazal that is ghazal. but do not have any feel for that.

My Favorite Ghazal singer is one & only Talat Mahmood ...He has got such a melodious voice. Ghulam Ali is also joss.
Jagjit, Pankaj, Hariharan ... they are also good, but now a dayz what they are singing is not at all pure ghazal. There are some old trackz of these guyz which can be treated as pure ghazal.

hi hope u guys dont mind my reviving this old thread.
sobai daarun gazaaler list diyechen -- tobei i think a discussion on gazaals is incomplete without talknig about their shayars -- the guys who write all those unbeleivable couplets. well here are a few of my favourite's 1.mirza ghalib -the indispuable king - for al ltiems i guess well all or most of his works are gems -- but i specially like ''hazaron quahishe aisi'' if you can get your hands on it - check out the album ''ghalib'' performed by jagjit singh. 2.mir taqi mir - almost lcose to ghalib - hugely under rated. 3.ibne inshah - kaal chaudvin ki chaand thi 4.ahmed faraz- pakistani - fantastic poet -both contemporary and ageless -teri baatein hi sunane aaye 5. gulzar -among the very very best . countless amazing songs he has written notably - marasim (the entire album) fur sat ke raat din ab ke na sawan barse 6.kaifi azmi-- the immortal ''tum itna jo muskura rahe ho"' 7. javed akhtar-my fave -jate jate woh mujhe acchi nishani de gawa 8.qateel shafai -apne haathon ki lakkero me basale 9. quaseer ul zaffri -- deewaron se milkar rona(fantastic is it not) 10.josh malhabadi - kisko aati hain masihai. a few others have got left out -- but still.... about singers - i tihnk most of the great gazaal singers and their best gazaals have been already mentioned in the thread. iam mentioning some lesser known but equally telented pakistani singers. 1.m ussarat nazir - chale ot kat hi jayega 2.saiyyan chowdhuri -yeh kya hain ek jahan 3. munni begum --all -all her songs. 4.and of course -- the legendary --noor jahan and two more from india 1.bhupinder- who if not for his alcoholism -could have been the premiere gazaal singer of india . he's sung so many amazing numbers -fursat ke raat din/ek akela is shehar mein /is mod se jaate hain. 2.chandan das- he's from west bengal -he's been around for a long tiem but soemhow has not got into limelights that much. recently pankaj udhas has pioneered a pop gazaal kinda gibberish -and jagjit singh is laos moving away from the traditinoal reinditions - but i think on order to maek out the real essence of a gazaal -you have ot be at live programmes-- in the limitations and itme frames of albums often singers cant give free reign to their talent. last year i was at a programme featuring both ghulam al iand jagjit singh -and both took 30 -40 mins with a song -and it was just amazing -their improvisations- their subtle variations -ghulam ali even did the maddening thing of singing a song in two different ragas -one for the night and one for sunrise as per the lyrics in the song- and he literally changed it mid sentence- it has to be heard ot be believed.. cheers partha
